In the nineteenth century the population of Chesterfield increased rapidly. Much of the expanding population was housed in the poorer areas of the town, where living conditions deteriorated. In 1893 Chesterfield was described as having some of the worst slums in England. By 1939 most of the slum housing had disappeared. How was this achieved and what is special about the Boythorpe Estate?
