At Pomegranate Theatre
Starts Evenings 7.30pm, Wed matinee 2pm, Sat matinee 3pm (Sat 3pm signed).
Part of a season of seven plays to celebrate 70 years of the Pomegranate Theatre as a civic theatre.
Sister George is a beloved character on a popular radio soap opera, a cheerful nurse who bicycles about the countryside singing hymns and doing good. In real life, June Buckridge, the actress who plays the character, is a gin-swigging tyrant, the complete opposite to her radio persona. She’s in a long-term relationship with Alice “Childie” McNaught, who she treats cruelly.
Due to low ratings, cut-backs and June’s increasingly bad behaviour, the BBC decide that Sister George is no longer for this world. A plan is hatched to kill Sister George off, sending June’s professional and private life spiralling out of control.
A timeless examination of the public and private lives of celebrities, The Killing of Sister George feels pertinent today. It is thought that the play was inspired by the death of Grace Archer in The Archers.
Approx. running time: 2 hours 30 mins (subject to change)
