Every winter, in the depths of Alaska, a group of athletes gather to race 1,000 miles across Alaska's frozen lakes, forests, mountains and sea-ice, following the route of the infamous Iditarod Trail. Andy Heading, a Derbyshire cyclist and sports photographer, describes his attempt to become the first European ever to complete this epic challenge, and the obstacles he had to overcome just to reach the start-line.
