The Pomegranate Theatre is now temporarily closed to make way for the ambitious plans to refurbish Chesterfield’s historic Stephenson Memorial Hall, which houses the museum and theatre.
The refurbishment of the hall is projected to cost around £17 million with £11 million of funding being secured via the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, and a further £695,000 from Arts Council England.
The work will bring together an extended theatre, a reconfigured and modern museum, alongside new gallery space, a café bar, education and community facilities.
The work will also protect the Grade II Listed building and ensure that it remains part of Chesterfield’s heritage for generations to come.
Creating a more accessible experience is another key aim of the proposals. The plans include three new lifts which will significantly improve the accessibility of the building for visitors, artists and employees.
Also included in the plans are improvements to lighting, heating and ventilation.

While the work is underway, selected performances will be relocated to the Winding Wheel Theatre. This year’s Pantomime - Sleeping Beauty is already on sale, and we have a range of cinema and screenings taking place at the Grade II Listed venue which was originally a Picture House.
Friends will continue to get current membership benefits for events such as the above, but we understand that you may not be able to use your membership as much as you would like. With this in mind, we are delighted to let you know that when your current Friends membership expires, it will automatically be renewed free of charge on a monthly rolling basis until a new and improved membership scheme is launched to coincide when the Stephenson Memorial Hall re-opens. It is at this point that your free membership will cease and you will be able to choose if you would like to join our new paid membership scheme.
